Floralba Castro was born in Bogota, Colombia in 1931 and was the second born of 6 children to Maria del Carmen González and Felix Avelardo Galindo. She had a difficult early life and marriage, but all of that changed when she moved to New York in 1963 with her two little boys, Enrique and Richard. Later, she was joined by her mother and new born baby, Jackie.
Flora worked in the New York garment district for 30 years. She began as a seamstress in the factories but quickly learned English to pursue a career in pattern-making and design.
She worked for several international fashion companies and her designs were sold in Saks 5th Ave, Bloomingdales, and Henri Bendels amongst other couture lines. Floralba finished her fashion career assisting the growth and popularity of American designer Cynthia Rowley.
Floralba was strong, resilient, determined, encouraging, compassionate, and loving daughter, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.
She will be remembered mostly for her love of adventure and fearless attitude. Her Favorite sayings:
"Joy comes only from you who creates it"
"Your body, mind, and spirit are Holy. Treat them as such."
Mama, Your body may have left this earth, but your spirit lives with us forever.
